MOBILE SECURITY TRENDS 2018
We are already a month into the year 2018 and we see new buzz words coming along the lines of Mobile Security. Hence we decided to list out the Security Trends for Mobile for the year 2018. We have listed after listening to various Researchers and Experts. So here are the Top Mobile Security Trends for the year 2018.
- GDPR COMPLIANCE
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which would be coming into action on May 28 2018, will be a major lookout for organizations that are looking to secure data on mobile devices. Under the GDPR, organizations are required to secure all the data in the mobile devices or data in transit from one mobile device to another, to a desktop or an application, together with data being processed. Organizations will need to look at what devices employees are using, what type of data they have and where it is being stored and put mobile management platforms in place.
The complexity involved here is huge considering the risks involving the data privacy leakage as the employees usually install personal applications also store their private data on Office Devices.
- Wi-Fi HACKS
A security researcher discovered a flaw, dubbed KRACK, short for key Reinstallation AttaCk , which relates the authentication process of Wi-Fi’s protected access, known as WPA2. Attackers have to be physically close to the target, but once in they can decrypt traffic, launch man-in-the-middle attacks or hijack connections. There is an easy fix patch available.
- MOBILE BASED ATTACKS
Now a day, use of mobile phones is rapidly growing which attracts the cybercriminals. McAfee Labs reports that the first half of 2017, 16 millions incident of mobile malware have taken place.
Most likely threats are targeting mobile devices at the source of distributed denial of service attacks on web services. Readily available DDos kits and DDos as a platform services are making easy for the attackers to launch the attacks.
- RISE OF RANSOMWARE
We can say as the Global Nightmare for Ransomware attack. Mobile Ransomware arises in the first quarter of 2017. Attacks increasing on Android devices, Android Ransomware is attracting cybercriminals, this type of Android based attacks are the easiest way for cybercriminals to make money or stealing credentials by phishing or stealing contacts, messages and so on.
Cybercriminals will be stepping up their attacks on mobile phones in 2018. For those who don’t have robust security policies and any awareness and training, it is going to be the huge issue that needs attention in 2018.
- FOCUS WILL BE SHIFTING FROM DEVICE MANAGEMENT TO DATA PROTECTION
There was a time, where data could be described as BELONGING to a particular device, but that is not true today, now data freely floats between devices. We can say devices don’t matter much anymore. How data is shared, how it is protected, both during use and rest are matters.
- MOBILE PAYMENTS WILL GROW MORE
In 2017 we have seen many enterprises which made payments easier than ever before [cashless transactions]. Like, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Paytm, Mobile Paypal and many other e-wallets and also raised a lot of security questions. Now almost everywhere we can see cashless transactions including mobile wallets. E-wallets and also online payment mode, so no doubt that mobile payment will grow more and more.
So, there were our pick for the Mobile Security Trends for the year 2018. Let us know if we missed out any of the Topics or Trends, in the comment section below.
